The Town of Davie hosts its annual picnic celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The three-hour event consists of a picnic featuring entertainment for the entire family including games and activities for the children. There will also be featured guest speakers in addition to an inspiring poetry contest in honor of the holiday. Pre-registration is necessary for entry into the poetry contest.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in Miami is nearly synonymous with the annual parade and festival in the city. The expansive parade includes thousands of parade goers as well as plenty to see and do as guests of honor march along with the likes of local marching bands. The parade begins at N.W. 54 St. and 10 Ave. and ends at Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Park where a grand festival is held until 6 p.m. It’s a family-friendly event complete with entertainment for the children.

Community service and helping others were part of the great message of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Florida International University celebrates the occasion by promoting these efforts with the MLK Day of Service. The event is open to students, staff members and members of the community to spend a day of change through food donations and volunteer work. 2015 marks the 50th year of FIU’s participation and participants are encouraged to pledge 50 hours of community service.

The holiday can be celebrated in the form of a healthy and family-friendly fitness run in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. All participants meet at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Metrorail Station to go on to take part in their registered races. The races include a timed 5K run for adults, a 5K run for youth 14 years of age and younger and timed 5K fitness walks for adults and youth. Registration costs between $10 and $20 per person.

The Temptations Review comes in honor of the 25th anniversary of the Coral Springs Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration. The greatest hits from The Temptations will be performed by The Temptations Review featuring Dennis Edwards – the last surviving member of The Temptations. There will be a meet and greet with the musicians prior to the show.
