Finishing its last concert of the summer series, the Heineken Downtown Miami DWNTWN Concert Series promotes community interaction by offering free shows featuring local and international artists in wonderfully scenic locations such as Bayfront Park and the Olympia Theater. The August 9 show will feature Conjunto Progresso performing modern takes on Cuban Son style and Palo!, local “Afro-cuban funk” players who will you keep you on your feet.

In addition to being an architecturally breathtaking building designed by Frank Gehry, the New World Center on Miami Beach also features an over-7000-square-foot projection wall, which is used primarily to broadcast the New World Symphony performance happening inside of the center. Families are encouraged to bring blankets and picnic baskets to bask in the masterworks of Beethoven, Bach and beyond. If you’re more of a film buff, the SoundScape Cinema Series also projects classic and modern movies on alternate dates. Both events are free to the public.

Student performances at the collegiate level are a great way to affordably experience the arts. Not only does the great South Florida weather attract major artists to come down and share their talents, but it also gives residents a first-hand opportunity to support the next generation of artists and performers. “Cardenio” kicks off the fall semester of FIU Theatre, a play revolving around an Italian wedding of Shakespearean proportions. Expect “mismatched lovers, sexual intrigue, sudden reversals [and] traveling actors,” also known as any night on South Beach. Tickets are $15 with reduced prices for students and alumni.

A living comedy legend, Paul Mooney has, in addition to his own hilarious stand-up, written for Richard Pryor, “In Living Color” and “Chappelle’s Show.” You may remember his character “Homey the Clown” (acted by Damon Waynes) or the classic one-liner spoken as his character “Negrodomos” from “Chapelle’s Show.” When asked, “Why do white people love Wayne Brady?” he answers, “Because Wayne Brady makes Bryant Gumbel look like Malcolm X.” Paul Mooney’s skeptical take on recent controversial news events is the best blend of classic comic timing and delivery while effortlessly skewering poignant topics like race and religion. At $20 a ticket, this bargain is no joke.
